Waynesborough park events start Saturday

Waynesborough Historical Village will host a flower show and a civilian living history day in May and a two-day Summerfest in July.
The flower show will be held Saturday and will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Plants will be available for sale after the judging, which should be finished by noon.
The Goldsboro Council of Garden Clubs, which is sponsoring the flower show, will treat the judges to lunch in the Hatch house, which is a new addition to the village that now houses the Southeast North Carolina Civil War offices.
The civilian living history day will held on May 20 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with each house in the historical village featuring a different aspect of civilian life in the 1800s. Historical re-enacators will demonstrate spinning, looming, dying, quilting and weaving, blacksmithing and medical treatment. Children wearing period dress will demonstrate games that children played in the 1800s.
Summerfest 2006 will be held July 8 and 9, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. Games will include 19th-century favorites such as tug-of-war, hopscotch and horseshoes. There will be a watermelon eating contest and a watermelon seed spitting contest, along with music, craft items and plenty of food vendors. The village general store will be open with 1800s style treats and toys.
On Sunday, a worship service will be held in the Bethany Friends Meeting House, with Rev. Ken Krueger speaking. Bring your musical instrument for a jam session following services.
