The Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is looking for lifeguards in case the state Parks and Recreation Department decides to permit swimming in the park's 11-acre lake.

Low water levels prevented swimming last summer, but the lake levels are ahead of this time last year, officials said. And although the lake has been filling up slowly, rangers expect to have enough water level by Memorial Day weekend -- the swimming area's traditional opening day.

If rangers get the go-ahead, the swimming area will be open through Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. An admission fee is required, and swimming is permitted only when lifeguards are on duty.

Anyone interested in being a lifeguard should call 778-6234 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call 778-6234 or on the visit www.ncsparks.net for updates on the lake levels
