Princeton Town Board approves sewer work

PRINCETON -- About $211,000 worth of sewer and water line repairs were approved Monday night by the Princeton town board.
The town's contracted engineer, C.T. Clayton Sr. of New Bern, said the money had been left over from a previous sewer project.
The two main sewer problems, Clayton said, were a lift station that serves Smith and Mercer streets and another on Edwards Street.
Clayton then prioritized water line problems into five projects: Floors Street; East Edwards Street from Church to Pierce Street; East First Street from Center to Church Street; East Second Street from Walnut to Pierce Street, and West Second Street from Pine to Elm Street.
If enough money is left, Clayton said, then a line on West Second Street will be repaired from James almost to Everette Street.
Police Chief Eddie Lewis said rental mobile homes at 205 S. Church St. and 427 S. Pine St. were condemned.
The owner of another mobile home at 429 S. Pine St. was given 90 days to repair it or face condemnation.
The town board agreed to pay a veterinarian's bill of almost $400 for an abused animal that police picked up and took to the Johnston County animal shelter. The owner had refused to pay the bill.
"That's a $400 lesson, folks," Lewis told the board. "That's the bottom line."
As a result, Lewis introduced a resolution that would make the county's animal control officer the investigating officer in animal cruelty cases. The board approved the resolution.
In other business, the board:
*Tabled until June 5 a decision on a request by the Princeton Masonic Lodge to place a cornerstone at the new Town Hall.
*Appropriated $3,000 to the Princeton Library for computer expenses.
*Approved an ordinance for minimum driveway access standards with a $100 fee for a new driveway and $50 for a second inspection.
