Woman dies
from injuries
sustained
in accident
A pedestrian who was struck April 24 on Bogue Road has died of her injuries, the Highway Patrol said.
The victim, Mattie Newton Newsome, 88, of 421 Bogue Road, Fremont, died Thursday, Trooper B.B. Grady said in a report filed today.
The report said Ms. Newsome was crossing the road at about 3:14 p.m. and was struck by a northbound car, about eight-tenths of a mile north of Davis Mill Road.
The driver, Paul Randall Bracken, 42, of Pelt Road, Stantonsburg, was not charged. His car sustained about $800 in damages.
The fatality was the ninth vehicle-related death this year in Wayne County.
Meanwhile, the other drivers in a traffic fatality that occurred Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 70 and O'Berry Center Road have been identified by the Highway Patrol.
The victim, Whitney Shea Taylor, 21, of Deer Acres Drive, was killed at about 7:25 a.m. as she tried to cross U.S. 70 from the side road.
The report said Ms. Taylor's car had collided with an eastbound car that was driven by Pradeep Kumar Palreddy, 32, of Raleigh. The impact sent Ms. Taylor's car into a stopped, westbound auto that was driven by Lafayette Alston Wade, 77, of Workman Street.
Damage was estimated at $5,500 to Palreddy's 2005 Chrysler and $500 to Wade's 1991 Nissan. Ms. Taylor's 2000 Pontiac, valued at $6,000, was demolished.
Drug charges
A 25-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with three felony drug and one felony weapons offense in his home.
Jarckus James Hunter of Rudolph Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Hunter was arrested after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
Man hit, robbed
Two home invasions are being investigated by Wayne County authorities.
A man was assaulted and robbed by two white men before dawn today in his home in the 100 block of Round Top Lane, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
Alan Jay Kegley, 48, told deputies that he was sleeping on his couch at about 1:45 a.m. when two men kicked in his front door, put a gun to head, demanded his money and struck him in the face.
The suspects, dressed in all black, grabbed $50 and personal papers and fled in a four-door white car toward Parkstown, the report said.
Kegley then ran outside to a neighbor's house and called for help. He was treated by rescue personnel.
Five black men kicked open a door Monday night at a home in the 600 block of North Claiborne Street, startling the resident and two relatives who were in the kitchen, Goldsboro police said. Pamela Parks and the relatives fled.
Nothing was reported stolen, but damage to the door was set at $300. The intruders could not be described further.
Equipment fire
An equipment malfunction was blamed Monday for a fire that caused about $1,200 in damages at Dewey Brothers at 705 S. George St., the Goldsboro Fire Department reported.
A wood-grinding processing unit used to grind old railroad ties into mulch caught on fire, Assistant Fire Chief Eric Lancaster said today. The ties contain some metal parts, which may have caused a spark during the grinding and ignited the filters in the air bag housing, he said.
Fourteen firefighters answered the 6:19 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about an hour to put out the fire. The unit was valued at $8,000.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A rifle, a black-powder rifle and four shotguns were stolen Monday from a home in the 200 block of Pineview Cemetery Road, sheriff's deputies said. No sign of forced entry was reported, but the thief had smashed a gun case to get the firearms. The resident, Bobby Jim Williams, estimated the firearm's value at $2,090 and damage at $250.
*Twenty-four 12-volt batteries were stolen between Sunday and Monday from Goldsboro Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep at 604 Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, Goldsboro police said. The batteries were valued at $1,247. The thief may have broken a window and then pried open an interior door, the report said.
*A car was scratched, its four tires were cut and trash was thrown on it between Sunday and Monday in the 500 block of Hinson Street, police said. The resident and owner, Bomita Hardy, estimated damages at $900.
Missing
A 25-year-old man was reported missing Monday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Omar Seda Otero of 107 Colonel Warrick Road, Dudley, was described as Hispanic, 5-feet-9 and 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was seen last at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Anyone with information on his whereabouts was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
