Hospital recognizes 60 nursing staff members at annual banquet

Wayne Memorial Hospital recognized 60 nurses and nurses assistants Thursday night at Walnut Creek Country Club, with 15 receiving the Excellence in Nursing award.
Candidates were nominated by co-workers, managers and others based on compassion, leadership and upholding the vision of the hospital. Judges from across the state reviewed the nomination packets with candidates' names removed to assure anonymity.
The 15 finalists each received a crystal flame award.
William Paugh, hospital chief executive officer and president, said the evening was a tribute to all those in the health care profession who have made the hospital what it is.
"You are the reputation of this hospital," he said. "As tough as it is, I think we all are very fortunate to be involved in the healing ministry of this community."
Honorees included:
*Brenda Allen, nursing assistant, oncology, 15 years experience at the hospital.
*Shana Bostic, RN, PACU, 13 years' experience, five at Wayne Memorial.
*Kitty Bryan, RN, pediatrics, 15 years at the hospital.
*Elgie Cotter, RN, PACU, two years in area, 16 total.
*Roy Cottle, nursing assistant in PACU, five of his six years in the profession at Wayne Memorial.
*Shannon Garcia, RN, fourth floor AMU, 10 years at the hospital.
*Donna Kearney, RN, endoscopy, 14 of her 21 years at Wayne Memorial.
*Sheila Kidd, RN, sixth floor, 14 years' experience.
*Sherry Rogers, RN, staff development director, 14 of her 29 years at Wayne Memorial.
*Geneva Sauls, LPN, sixth floor labor and delivery, 29 years' experience.
*Camille Smith, RN, seventh floor, six of her 15 years at Wayne Memorial
*Jennifer Sugg, RN, ICU, seven of eight years in profession at Wayne Memorial.
*Polly Teel, RN, seventh floor, 25 of 41 years in profession at Wayne Memorial.
*Jean Varney, RN, perioperative care, 38 years at Wayne Memorial.
*Kimberly Wise, nursing assisting, sixth floor, two years at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Dona Caine-Francis of Lake Norman, psychiatric clinical nurse specialist and former president of the N.C. Nurses Association, was guest speaker for the event.
Playing off of David Letterman's "Top 10" list, she shared the top 10 qualities of being a nurse of excellence.
