WCC business students pick up honors at state competition

Members of Wayne Community College's of Phi Beta Lambda business education student organization collected nearly two dozen honors at the organization's State Leadership Conference in Raleigh.
The Gamma Chi chapter competed against 37 other college and university chapters from across North Carolina.
Seven members will go on to compete in seven different events at the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in June.
The chapter won four regional honors: second place in Largest Local Chapter Delegation, first place in Largest Increase in Local Chapter Membership, second place in Largest Local Chapter Membership and second place in Largest Percentage Increase in Local Chapter Membership.
In state competition, it also earned first place in Largest Increase in Local Chapter Membership and third place in Largest Percentage Increase in Local Chapter Membership.
The chapter was awarded a Terry Lowrance Leadership Award which recognizes outstanding local chapters that have actively participated in Phi Beta Lambda state and national conferences, projects, programs, and publicity and membership activities throughout the year: It was named for an advisor who served the state organization for 24 years.
Gamma Chi was also recognized as a North Carolina Gold Seal Chapter, an honor presented to less than 16 percent of the state's total local active chapters. This award recognizes outstanding local chapters that have actively participated in projects and programs identified with the goals of Phi Beta Lambda.
Results of individual competitions included: Nathen Rennels, sixth place in Business Law; Robert Mitchell, first place, and Justin Currin, third place in C++ Programming; Jessie Talton, eighth place in Computer Concepts; Robert Mitchell, second place in Java Programming; John Martin, first place, and Michael Boyette, third place in Networking Concepts; Joshua Berens, first place in Telecommunications; Jessie Talton, second place, and Donald Moore, fourth place in Visual Basic Programming; and Dustin Gurley, first place in Website Development.
Team awards went to Dana Hine and Nathen Rennels, third place in Emerging Business Issues; and Joshua Berens, Justin Currin and Christopher Thomas, second place in Network Design; and Michael Boyette and John Martin, third place, also in Network Design. First and second-place winners of these individual and team events are eligible for national competition.
