Meadow Lane Elementary to be recognized

Meadow Lane Elementary School will be honored later this month for reaching out to a sister school in Louisiana devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
The St. Tammany Parish Public School System in Covington, La., recently named Meadow Lane Elementary a finalist for the Superintendent's Award For Outstanding Character and Citizenship.
Folsom Elementary School nominated Meadow Lane for its concern and support shown to the school system after Hurricane Katrina.
After the hurricane, Meadow Lane Elementary adopted Folsom Elementary School in Folsom. To date, students and staff have raised more than $2,500 for the school. They also sent books, musical instruments and other classroom resources.
The St. Tammany Parish school system has invited administrators from Meadow Lane to be recognized during a special reception in Mandeville, La., on April 25.
Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of Wayne County Public Schools, congratulated the local school for its efforts.
"We know students and faculty who lent a helping hand didn't do it for the recognition, but they did it because it was simply the right thing to do."
Wayne County is no stranger to hurricanes, having been affected in the past by similar situations.
"After recent hurricanes devastated states along the Gulf Coast, our 31 schools quickly helped raise thousands of dollars as well as collected thousands of pounds of food and supplies for people in need," he said.
