Electrical failure
blamed for fire
An electrical problem has been blamed for a fire that destroyed a two-car garage and damaged a house, a swimming pool and a barn at 178 Hood Swamp Road, fire officials said Wednesday.
New Hope Volunteer Fire Chief Bud Gray said evidence pointed to an electrical failure in the garage that was owned by Scott Harris.
The garage, valued at $25,000, and the contents inside, valued at $5,000, were destroyed.
Fifteen New Hope firefighters answered the 4:03 p.m. alarm Tuesday with three trucks. When they left the station, firefighter Jason Gray said, they saw smoke, and when they arrived six minutes later, the garage was engulfed in flames.
The fire was controlled within an hour, but firefighters remained for another hour to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Pinewood, Saulston and East Wayne volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the home that was valued at $110,000, $5,000 to the swimming pool that was valued at $25,000 and $200 to the barn that was valued at $1,500.
Man charged
in break-in
Goldsboro police arrested a 35-year-old man Wednesday and charged him in connection with a residential break-in.
Corey Maurice Coley, who did not reveal a home address, was charged with three felony offenses, breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods, in connection with a break-in at Jay Best's home in the 1600 block of East Walnut Street.
About $1,850 worth of stolen property was recovered, Investigator Dwayne Bevell said. The property included video-game equipment, a radio, a compact disc player, a backpack and $300 in cash.
Coley was captured in the 300 block of South Herman Street after being chased by Bevell and Investigators Dave Cloutier and M.K. Horstmann.
When he was apprehended, Coley also was charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
An investigation of other break-ins in east Goldsboro is continuing, investigators said, and more charges are possible.
Drug charges
Two people were arrested Wednesday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with drug violations in a home in the 500 block of East Elm Street.
The resident, Antonio Devon Lamm, 18, and Tanesha Shenette Uzzell, 16, of Isler Street, were charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Lamm was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 secured bond. Ms. Uzzell was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
The Sheriff's Special Weapons and Tactics Team and Goldsboro police investigators and patrol officers assisted in the search after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
A third person was arrested before dawn today by Goldsboro police at North James and West Holly streets and charged with drug violations.
Tynisha Moneek Jones, 22, of Selma was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. She was jailed in lieu of a $3,500 secured bond.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Six video cameras and video-game equipment were stolen before dawn today from Rent-a-Center at 1809 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro police said. The thief had smashed a door glass to get inside and then shattered a display case to steal the property, the report said. The stolen property was valued at $3,064. Damages were set at $380.
*A jewelry box with jewelry, video-game equipment and $260 in coins were stolen Tuesday after a window and a door were damaged at a rental home in the 3900 block of U.S. 117 North, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Kathy R. Ham, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,229, in addition to the cash. Damages were set at $370 at the home, owned by Kevin Todd Whitley of Goldsboro.
*Art supplies, a cell phone and a book bag were stolen Wednesday after a car window and the console were damaged in the 900 block of East Mulberry Street, police said. The stolen property was valued at $130. Damage was set at $250 to the car, owned by Ranae Rogerson.
*A total of $6 was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a car window and the console were damaged in the 1300 block of Robin Street, police said. The owner, Tsharia Williams of Goldsboro, estimated damages at $350.
Missing
A 17-year-old boy has been reported missing by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Chad Rubein Nord of 103 Country Run Lane was described as white, 6-feet-3 and 200 pounds with short blond hair and blue eyes.
When Nord was seen last at 7 a.m. Thursday, he was wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information on his whereabouts was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
