Clerk, customer
are shot at store
A teenage clerk and a customer at a convenience store were shot Thursday night, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The clerk, Basem Allan, 16, and the customer, Antron Hines, 21, both of Goldsboro, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where they were treated in the emergency room and released, a spokeswoman said.
Allan told police that he was working at the Express Mart at 518 E. Elm St. at about 7 p.m., when he went outside to tell a group of five or six black men to leave the parking lot. As he turned around and walked back to the store, the report said, Allen heard five or six shots.
Allan went inside and realized that he had been shot in the upper right shoulder blade, the report said.
Hines said he had gone to the store to buy cheeseburgers for himself and a friend and then went outside to ask his friend what he wanted on the burger. That's when his friend heard someone say, "Don't shoot."
At that time, the report said, Hines said he heard shots, then went inside the store and realized that he had been shot in the arm. The bullet passed through the arm and entered his chest.
Neither Allan nor Hines could describe the assailants.
Totem pole burned
An Indian totem pole at Eastern Wayne High School was burned between Thursday night and dawn today, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The totem pole sustained about $7,000 in damages, the report said. New Hope volunteer firefighters were summoned and put out the fire. Eastern Wayne's mascot is the Warriors.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A white, tandem-axle trailer was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from the Leonard Aluminum Utility Buildings store at 4273 E. U.S. 70, police said. The trailer was valued at $5,300.
*About $150 was stolen between March 10 and Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 500 block of West New Hope Road, police said. The resident, Kelly Herring, estimated damage at $50.
*A television, stereo equipment, two coats, two bracelets and a watch were stolen Thursday from a home in the 100 block of Hines Drive, police said. The resident, Ronnie Butler, put an $820 value on the property. No sign of forced entry was reported.
