Fremont STARS Elementary School unveiled its winning artwork chosen for a commemorative cancellation stamp this week that will be used the local post office.

The Fremont Post Office had announced the art contest in the fall. School students were encouraged to create a design to help promote the town's annual Daffodil Festival.

Each class at the school contributed a picture, and every student contributed something to the drawing.

This week, Freda Davis' kindergarten students were told that their design had been selected. Ceremonies were held at the school on Tuesday morning to announce the winners and present students with certificates and ribbons.

A plaque was also given for display in the school.

Principal Debbie Ogburn said she was proud of her school and its students and that everyone there was excited over the opportunity to create something that could be seen all over the world.

Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of schools, had announced the school's participation in the competition during Monday night's Board of Education meeting. He said to his knowledge, it was the first time a school in Wayne County had received such an honor.

The stamp will make its debut on March 25.
