Pikeville annexes land near bypass

Pikeville town commissioners voted Monday to annex 54 acres owned by Barbara Lancaster along the U.S. 117 bypass. The property was re-zoned at last month's meeting and designated for community shopping.
Also approved was a rezoning request by Patricia Williams. Mrs. Williams has five houses on property adjacent to Cornerstone Properties on U.S. 117, and had requested her land be given the community shopping designation. The property is outside city limits.
Pikeville resident Willie Teachey spoke to the commissioners on concerns about the aesthetics of the town's water tower. Verizon Wireless recently installed an antenna on top of the water tower, and constructed a building to store electronic equipment. A fence was erected around the building for security. Teachey said the structures were affecting the value of his property.
Commissioner Johnny Weaver said the town was working with Landscape Design to beautify the area, and that Leland cypress trees could be planted.
Mayor Herb Sieger gave an update on the town's sewer project.
"We're running water through the sewer plant," Sieger said. The next step would be to clean the lagoon system and preparing the new system to begin pumping water, he said.
In other business, Sieger proposed the town investigate the feasibility of adding a second air conditioning unit to the board room at the town community building.
