Bikers ride March 25 for Red Cross

The roar of motorcycles will be heard loud and strong throughout Wayne County March 25 as bikers ride to raise money for the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The 2nd annual Ride for the Red will get under way at 9 a.m. with registration. The ride will start at 11 a.m. at the chapter house, escorted by local law enforcement officials.
A 75-mile scenic route will take riders all over Wayne County, ending at Doug Henry Pontiac GMC.
The event is being sponsored by the Goldsboro Chapter of the Blue Knights International, an organization of active and retired law enforcement personnel. Its purpose is to promote motorcycle safety and assist in local fundraising activities for worthy causes.
Glenn Barnes is the coordinator of the fundraising event. He has been a "hero" for the Red Cross for the past few years, committing to raise $1,000 for the organization.
"The Red Cross is a cause near and dear to my heart," Barnes said. "I've had family members affected by house fires and the Red Cross was there for them.
"I've also been to some large fires, such as the Paramount Theater, and the Red Cross is always there. I've seen everything that they do. I think Red Cross is something that's essential."
As president of the local Blue Knights chapter, Barnes rallied its members to become involved in fundraising for the Red Cross.
Registration for the event is $20 for a rider and $10 for a co-rider. The first 150 people to register will receive a free Ride for the Red T-Shirt.
The ride is open to all motorcyclists -- clubs and individuals.
Sponsors are also needed.
Following the ride, lunch will be provided. There will be door prizes and a drawing.
This year's goal is $5,000, according to Barnes. Last year's goal was $3,000 and the Blue Knights raised $4,2000. "Every dollar that's raised will go to the Red Cross," said Barnes.
