Middle school students recognized

Teachers, principals, and staff from Wayne County Public Schools helped honor 30 middle school boys Tuesday at the W.E.H.O.P.E. Luncheon at the H. V. Brown Center in Goldsboro.
W.E.H.O.P.E., which stands for "Working Enthusiastically to Help Other People Excel," is a mentoring program for underachieving male students from Brogden, Goldsboro, and Dillard Middle Schools. Its goal is to help the youths build self-esteem, improve academic achievement, reduce school absences, and improve discipline problems. The group also works to promote character development and encourage them to take responsibility for academic achievement by developing personal goals for success.
Parents are also encouraged to become invested in the education process.
Dr. Ruby Bell, director of W.E.H.O.P.E., said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Our committee members have met with these young men on several occasions to let them know that they are loved, that they are important, that they are needed, that they are accepted, and that they could and would succeed.
"The committee believes that if you treat people as they ought to be, you will help them become what they are capable of being."
