Sampson art teachers featured in MOC show

A Mount Olive College professor's idea prompted nine Sampson County art teachers to put their hearts and talents into a five-week art show that will be featured at the Teresa Pelt Grubbs Art Gallery at the college.
The show began Feb. 16 and will run through March 23, with its grand opening held Thursday night.
Larry D. Lean, chairman of the college Department of Art and Visual Communication said the show, "Going Back to Creativity," features paintings, drawings, sculptures, digital prints, relief prints, and pottery.
"The theme is basically, once you start teaching you have little time to create and these teachers are 'going back to creativity.' What is also great about the show is that there are nine different approaches to the art discipline and many different media," he said.
The featured artists/teachers are Lynne Dukes of Salem & Charles E. Perry Elementary; Theresa Elias of Union High School; Carla Hall of Hobbton Middle School; Tatiania McCall of Union Elementary & Clement; Olivia Ollis of Union Elementary; Magen Pike of Midway Middle School; Rhonda Powell of Midway High School; Angela Thornton of Lakewood High School; and Christy Sullivan of Hobbton High School. Of the nine teachers, five majored in art at Mount Olive College.
"The teachers in this exhibition have embraced this self-nurturing aspect of being an artist/teacher," Cheryl Hooks, associated professor of fine arts, said. "I commend them for what they have accomplished with the works on display and the intent behind the exhibition."
