Couple and son charged in raid of meth lab
DUDLEY -- A couple and a son were arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and accused of running a large methamphetamine operation from their home.
Drug squad officers, with assistance from three other law-enforcement agencies, seized methamphetamine with a potential street value of $14,000, marijuana with an estimated street value of $750, $1,031 in cash and four firearms from a home in the 800 block of Ruskin Road.
Carey Bernard Manuel, 47, was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine by possession, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond.
Gloria Ann Manuel, 45, was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine by possession and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs. She was jailed in lieu of an $80,000 secured bond.
Brandon Carey Manuel, 19, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs. His secured bond was set at $50,000.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT, team and patrol deputies, the Goldsboro police SWAT team and the State Bureau of Investigation assisted in the case.
Man assaulted
A 29-year-old man from LaGrange was assaulted and cut during an attempted robbery Thursday night as he left a downtown pool hall, according a Goldsboro police report.
Robert Edward Dukes declined treatment at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Dukes told police that as he was walking to a parking lot, a black man, about 6-feet tall, approached and asked him for his money.
Dukes said he told the man he had no money, but the man pulled out a knife and swung it at him. The report said Dukes then grabbed the knife and fought with the other man until a third man jumped in to help Dukes. The suspect, who wore a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark clothes, fled.
Driver hurt
A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,600 Thursday in two traffic accidents in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 9:10 a.m. Thursday at East Beech and North Herman streets, police said. David Ray Overman, 50, of Carrboro Road, Fremont, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said an eastbound car driven by Claudia L. Brown, 60, of North Audubon Avenue had collided with Overman's southbound pickup truck. Ms. Brown was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stoplight. Damages were set at $4,000.
*Damages were estimated at $4,600 in a three-vehicle rear-end crash at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Country Day Road, police said. One driver, Miracle Latarsha Geddie, 24, of Maple Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other motorists were identified as Keosha Danyelle Sutton, 19, of Verbena Lane, Dudley, and Kimyotta Laterice Williams, 20, of South Herman Street.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $6,343 worth of property was stolen Thursday after a door was forced open at a home in the 900 block of Nahunta Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Angela G. Ayers, reported the theft of video-game equipment, a video camera, a desktop computer, a digital camera, two saws, a drill and a hammer set.
*Two cabinets and molding were stolen between Jan. 23 and Thursday after a window and two doors were damaged at a home in the 600 block of East Spruce Street, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Mary D. Lucas of Selma, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,600 and damages at $560.
*A News-Argus vending machine was damaged between Wednesday and Thursday at a convenience store at 766 N.C. 111 South, deputies said, in an attempt to steal money. Damage was estimated at $550.
*A thief damaged a window and two medicine cabinets between Wednesday and Thursday in order to steal $8 worth of property from a home in the 400 block of Watery Branch Church Road, deputies said. Damage was set at $100 at the C.D. Lamm home.
