Wayne science fair winners advance to regional level

The Wayne County Public Schools' science fair was held at Goldsboro High School on Feb. 12 for students who had competed and won local fairs at their individual schools. The county winners will now advance to the regional competition at UNC Wilmington on March 4.
Following is the list of county winners:
At the elementary level, first place was Jonathan Williams of Tommy's Road Elemen-tary School; second place, Zhyel Henderson of Tommy's Road; third place, Jeffrey Lane of Carver Elementary; and honorable mention, Elizabeth Barfield of Carver Elementary.
Middle school project winners were Morgan Herring of Rosewood Middle, first place earth science; Amber McEahern of Goldsboro Middle, first place physical science; Jarrel Kirby of Goldsboro Middle, second place physical science; Sarah Moore of Rosewood Middle, first place biological science; Bobbi Cannon, second place biological science; and LaKenya Wooten of Goldsboro Middle, third place biological science.
Science fair winners will have their entry fee for the regional competition paid for as their prize. Students who win at the regional level will then move on to state competition, which will be held March 24 and 25 at Meredith College in Raleigh.
Dr. Ralph Smith, lead teacher for science in Wayne County Public Schools, credited the teachers as well as students with efforts toward participating in the science fair.
"Wayne County science teachers work diligently to offer creative ways to get students excited about science and its impact on the world around them," he said. "By offering a countywide science fair, students can not only put their scientific skills to the test, but winning exhibits will also allow students to represent Wayne County Public Schools in larger competitions."
