Vickory will seek third term as district attorney

Wayne County District Attorney Branny Vickory has announced he will seek re-election to a third term in office and Wayne County school board member John Grantham also filed for re-election to another four-year term.

The filing period opened Monday and will end at noon on Feb. 28.

Vickory has served as district attorney for the 8th Prosecutorial District that includes Wayne, Lenoir and Greene counties.

Grantham represents the 4th District on the county Board of Education. The area includes much of the southwestern part of the county.

In Duplin County, Emily Manning filed for re-election to the District 3 seat on the Duplin school board.

Also on Tuesday, Carteret County resident Craig Weber, a former TV weatherman, filed to run for the 3rd Congressional District seat in Congress. Weber, a Democrat, is seeking the seat currently held by Republican Walter B. Jones Jr.

Also, Sen. John Kerr filed for re-election for the District 5 seat in the state Senate. Kerr has held the seat since 1992.

Candidates can file for these elected positions that will be determined in November: the Districts 1 and 3 congressional seats, state Supreme Court associate justice, Court of Appeals judge, the Districts 5 and 12 seats in the state Senate, the Districts 10, 11 and 21 seats of the state House of Representatives, district attorney, Superior Court judge, District Court judge, clerk of court, sheriff and the District 1, 4, 5 and 6 seats on the Wayne County Board of Education.

For more information on the elections, candidate filing and filing fees, people can call the Wayne County Board of Elections office at 731-1411. The office is located at 209 S. William St.

In Duplin County, residents can filed for district attorney, the District 10 seat in the state Senate, the Districts 3 and 7 seats in Congress, District Court judge, state House District 4, clerk of court, sheriff, the District 2 and 3 seats on the county Board of Commissioners and the District 2,3 and 4 seats on the county Board of Education.

The filing period for seats on the Soil and Water Conservation Boards in both Wayne and Duplin starts in June.
