The filing period of elected offices in Wayne County begins Monday at noon.
Candidates for a variety of offices can file at the county Board of Elections office at 209 S. William St.
The filing period ends at noon on Feb. 28.
Up for election will be seats in Congress, the state Senate and state House of Representatives, state Supreme Court and the state Court of Appeals.
Also to be determined will be the positions of District Court judge, county clerk of court, district attorney and sheriff.
Seats on the Wayne County school board representing districts 1, 4, 5 and 6 will be up for election as well.
Wayne voters will cast ballots on new voting machines, beginning with the May 2 primary.
The state Legislature ordered all counties to come up with voting systems that provide secure backups in case of tabulator failure. Several races in North Carolina remained contested for months after elections in 2004 when voting machines in several counties failed.
Wayne is expected to buy new voting machines soon and is under mandate to have them ready -- and poll workers trained to use them -- in time for early primary voting in April.
One-stop early voting for the May primary begins April 13 and ends April 29. A second primary, if necessary, would be held May 30.
The general election will be held Nov. 7. One-stop early voting for the general election starts Oct. 19 and ends Nov. 4.
Filing for a seat on the Soil and Water Conservation District Board starts June 12 and ends July 7.
Wayne voters will help choose representatives for the District 1 and District 3 congressional seats from North Carolina.
Voters also will help choose two seats in the state Senate, from districts 5 and 12, and three in the state House, from districts 10, 11 and 21.
Filing fees range from $1,500 for a seat in Congress to $99 for county Board of Education.
Questions about filing procedures or fees should be directed to the county Board of Elections office at 731-1411.
