A newborn infant found dead in the Goldsboro sewer system was a girl, police said.

Investigators said late Friday that they had no leads in the case.

The baby's body, with the umbilical cord still attached, was found Thursday morning about 10:30 at a lift station behind Edwards Truck Stop in the 900 block of the U.S. 117 South bypass.

Police said autopsy tests were continuing and would likely not be completed until later this week.

They asked that the public help solve the mystery. Anonymous information may be called in to investigator M.K. Horstmann with the Goldsboro Police Department at 580-4213 or to Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.

"I feel relatively sure that whoever this person is, someone close to them should know they have recently had a child or was recently pregnant," police spokesman Chad Calloway said.
