Goldsboro Builders Supply moving to Patetown Road

After 53 years downtown, Goldsboro Builders Supply is moving this summer. The company will relocate from Carolina Street to 701 Patetown Rd., the former site of SouthCo Distributing.
Arthur Lee Perry founded Goldsboro Builders at its current location in 1953. In the years since, the business has expanded, absorbing the train station and the old Taylor Beverage building, to sit on six acres and 80,000 square feet of building space.
"We had basically outgrown where we are here," said David Perry, Arthur Lee Perry's son and current owner. "It was prudent for us to move to a newer facility, a more efficent facility, than what we have now.
The new location will offer about 120,000 square feet on 15 acres, he said. Perry plans to designate 7,000 square feet for showroom space, an additional 5,000 for offices, and the rest for warehouse space.
The warehouse space will allow 90 percent of the company's products to be indoors, Perry said. "We'll be able to control our inventory much better."
"Customers will be able to drive into the building," he said. To facilitate that access, Goldsboro Builders is adding seven 20-foot-wide garage doors, so customers can transport lumber and other supplies.
Perry said the company has completed necessary demolition work on the new property, and is in the process of renovations.
Perry said he originally purchased land on New Hope Road for Goldsboro Builders, but changed his mind when the SouthCo property became available. He now plans to develop an office park on the New Hope Road property.
The downtown location will still hold sentimental value, Perry said.
"It's a family business. This is basically the only career I've ever had. It's always been home. I've got mixed emotions about leaving."
