Fremont enters sewer repair agreement

FREMONT -- The Fremont Town Board of Aldermen has adopted an amended engineering services agreement to repair its sewer system with its contracted engineering firm.
The board voted unanimously Tuesday night during a special meeting to accept the agreement with The Wooten Co. of Greenville.
Town Administrator Kerry McDuffie explained that the agreement was sent to the town's attorney, Jim Cauley of Wilson. Cauley changed it and returned it to the company. Then the company changed it a little more and returned it to the town -- all within a day.
Cauley, who attended the meeting, recommended that the board approve the changed terms.
The entire project will cost about $1,777,000. Fremont received a $1,552,000 grant from the N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund and a $200,000 grant from the N.C. Rural Center. The town then added a $25,000 match.
McDuffie had explained that the project will include smoke-testing sewer lines, inspecting manholes, monitoring sewer flow and mapping all sewer and water lines and storm drains. When the problems are identified, he said, then the town will start fixing them.
The project follows a $3.7 million project that included sewer lines from Fremont to Goldsboro and to Eureka and repairs to existing in-town lines. The project was completed in mid-2003.
In other business, the board:
*Postponed the regular February meeting for one week, to Feb. 28, because some aldermen could not be present.
*Scheduled a public hearing on a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant for March 21.
