Allen re-appointed city's mayor pro tem

Last year when Mayor Al King broke his foot, someone had to run council meetings and represent Goldsboro as its mayor. Chuck Allen did the work. After all, it was his job.
Goldsboro City Council appointed Allen to continue to serve Goldsboro as mayor pro tempore at its Jan. 23 meeting.
In the absence of the mayor, the mayor pro tempore assumes his duties. Under these circumstances, he is expected to conduct City Council meetings and represent the city as its top official.
Allen, now in his third year in the position, said he hopes his experiences last year will prepare him in the event he is needed to fill in for King.
"I think I would be as prepared as anyone else," he said. "I hope I'd be."
Allen was first elected to Goldsboro's City Council in 1999. He enjoys his job, and said he hopes the work of council over the past few years has made an impact.
"Hopefully my being there has made a difference," he said. "I hope that you can look around and see that we're making progress."
Allen said he knows there is a possibility he could have to serve as mayor.
He was a councilman when Mayor Hal Plonk died in office.
"When Mayor Plonk died, the basic problem was how are you going to appoint a new mayor," he said, adding the mayor pro tempore took over the job until King was brought in.
"It's always fun to be the mayor," he said. "But whether I'm mayor pro tem or a council member it doesn't make a difference. I just love to serve Goldsboro and its communities."
