Leadership class learns about government

Members of the 2005-06 Class of Leadership Wayne County spent a day learning about law and government recently.
The regents for the day were Christine Smith, a Cooperative Extension agent and Julie Beck, the director of student activities at Mount Olive College.
Class members met with Mount Olive Mayor Ruff Huggins and Wayne County Commissioner J.D. Evans who discussed the role of local government.
The class also visited the Goldsboro Fire Department, where they were shown the behind-the-scenes work firefighters do in preparation for emergency calls. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Sasser led the tour. The class then toured the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the county jail, with Sheriff Carey Winders explaining how his office and its officers maintain law and order in Wayne.
At midday, the class was treated to lunch at the Wayne Center, compliments of Jersey Mike's Subs and the Mount Olive College Student Government Association.
Trey Rhodes of the county Office of Emergency Services talked to the class about gang problems in the county. Class members then visited the Wayne County Courthouse, where Dr. Wanda Sykes and Christine Smith of the Cooperative Extension Service discussed leadership.
The day concluded with a mock trial conducted by Chief District Court Judge Joe Setzer.
