On March 1, Wayne County Public Schools will begin destruction of records for all exceptional students, special education students and students with disabilities who were born before Sept. 1, 1979 and attended Wayne County Public Schools or the former Goldsboro City school system.

Three types of records will be destroyed, including testing, evaluation, and Individual Education Plans or IEPs. The school system does not destroy records in a student's cumulative folder that include attendance data, transcripts, grades, medical documents or discipline records. The records are being destroyed in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

It is the responsibility of students or guardians to maintain exceptional children records after the student is 26 years old. Such individuals have until Feb. 28 to request copies of records before being destroyed.
