City accepting applications for public service funding

The City of Goldsboro began accepting proposals for assistance for public service activities, including after school enrichment programs, health services, home buyer education, and senior programs Monday, officials said.
Goldsboro's community development coordinator Wilmur Conyers said the applications will be considered for funding for the 2006-2007 fiscal year as part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
Each year, 15 percent of the money allocated through the CDBG fund goes towards public services. Last year, more than $69,000 was given to organizations that sponsor programs for low to moderate income residents.
"The demand for 2005 and 2006 was roughly $125,000," Mrs. Conyers said. "Money allocated to these public services must serve those who receive low to moderate incomes."
Conyers added in order to be considered for funding, interested agencies and organizations seeking grant funds to provide public services must complete the application process within the specified time frame.
Mrs. Conyers said the CDBG program funds other projects in addition to public services. Last year, more than $460,000 was dispersed across a wide range of services.
The housing rehabilitation program, designed to assist low and moderate income families in bringing their houses up to minimum housing standards, received $100,000. More than $164,000 was given to public facilities and another $10,000 went towards acquisition, demolition and clearance of substandard housing.
Applications for 2006 and 2007 will be accepted until March 31. For additional information on the CDBG program, groups may call the city of Goldsboro Department of Planning and Community Development Office at 919-580-4317.
