7 hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $19,800 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A Durham County school bus struck an awning at Goldsboro High School, causing about $1,000 in damages to the awning at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Goldsboro police said. The bus received about $100 in damages. The driver, Calvin Dewayne Freeman, 33, of Durham was not charged or injured. None of the 17 student passengers was injured.
*Five people were injured and both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 6 p.m. Dec. 22 at N.C. 55 and N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Jennifer Lynne Welch, 18, of Hubert, and her passenger, Andrew Joseph Welch, 21, of New Haven, Conn., and the other driver, Desmond Lashawn Wooten, 31, and his passengers, Crystal Kay Wooten, 32, and Michael Wooten, 19 months, all of Owens Family Road, LaGrange, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Welch, who was going south, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said that the car that Ms. Welch was driving collided with Wooten's eastbound auto. The cars, both 1995 Hondas, were valued at $10,000.
*A southbound driver was injured at 6:56 p.m. Dec. 22 when his pickup truck collided with farm machinery that was being towed north on Mills Road near Mills Loop Road, the Highway Patrol said. Walter Lee Cox, 58, of N.C. 55 West, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. The operator of the farm machinery, Alfonza Ortiz, 33, of Wales Road, Mount Olive, was charged with driving left of center. Damages were set at $6,200.
*A passenger was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 10:50 a.m. Dec. 21 on Stevens Mill Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Mattie Newsome, 70, of Blackjack Church Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Her driver, Patricia N. Fralick, 40, of Blackjack Church Road, was charged with driving left of center. The report said Ms. Fralick's van had run off the right side, come back on the road, run off the left side, struck a ditch and stopped in a field. Damage was put at $2,500.
Drug charges
Four Goldsboro residents were arrested Wednesday by authorities and charged with felony drug offenses.
Qushawn Montrell Broadhurst, 20, of Freeman Street and Jamarcus Donta Lennox, 18, of Brazil Street were charged by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, sale and delivery of marijuana and conspiracy on North Center Street. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Cynthia Annette Lee, 39, of East Walnut Street was charged by the Drug Squad with possession of cocaine in the 500 block of East Walnut Street. She was jailed in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
Montriquous Lamar Truzy, 18, of Winslow Place was charged by Goldsboro police with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana on South Slocumb Street. He was jailed in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Two red bush hogs were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from Carolina Tractors Inc. at 1504 U.S. 117 South, police said. The thief had cut a lock on a gate at Turner Greenhouses next door and then smashed a window at Carolina Tractors to get inside, the report said. The bush hogs were valued at $4,190. Damage was set at $300 to the gate and $75 to the window.
*An undetermined amount of alcoholic beverages and sports drinks were stolen between Wednesday and dawn today from the A Street Market at 303 A St., police said. The thief had pried open a wall near a door to get inside, the report said. Damage was put at $200.
Grass fires
Wayne County volunteer firefighters responded Wednesday to five grass, field or woods fires, according to reports filed with Wayne County Emergency Services.
Mount Olive firefighters and the N.C. Forestry Service went to N.C. 403 and Garner Chapel Road; Mar Mac and the Forestry Service went to the 100 block of Spring Branch Road; Rosewood responded to the 200 block of Valleywood Drive; Fremont arrived at the 400 block of Old Black Creek Road, and Rosewood was dispatched again to Riverbend Road.
Missing
A 15-year-old boy was reported missing Wednesday night to Goldsboro police from a group home at 411 Lynn Ave. Fiante Amerson was described as black, 5-feet-7 and 125 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.
When Amerson was seen last at 6:52 p.m. Wednesday, he was wearing a light brown shirt, blue jeans, black athletic shoes and a black and orange coat. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
