Sex charge
A teenager was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a felony sex offense involving a 3-year-old girl.
Robert Wayne Allen, 18, of Clay Road was charged with taking indecent liberties with a child. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Allen was arrested after Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom investigated a report of a sexual assault.
Man wounded;
another robbed
A man was shot and another man was robbed in separate incidents, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Perez Raiford, 39, of East Maple Street was shot in the left leg at 6:53 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Maple Street, a report said. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
The gunman was described as a black man, about 25 years old. He fled west on Maple Street.
Monquil Parks of Goldsboro told police that he and a woman friend were awakened before dawn today by loud noises in her home in the 500 block of South Audubon Avenue.
A black man had barged through the front door, entered the bedroom, pointed a handgun at Parks and demanded his money, the report said. Parks said he heard more voices in the home, then the gunman stole his cash and the suspects fled, the report said.
The gunman was described as 6-feet tall with a small build.
Damage was estimated at $150 to the door at Rashetta Carter's home.
Crime of the Week
Business break-ins have been selected by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as this week's "Crime of the Week."
Break-ins were reported during the night Dec. 4 or early morning Dec. 5 at the Family Dollar store on Five Points Road and the American Legion post and the E-Z Mart convenience store on U.S. 117 South. An undetermined amount of cash was stolen. The thieves had used a cutting tool to get the money.
Anyone with information on these break-ins or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
House fire
A malfunctioning floor furnace was blamed Tuesday for a house fire that caused an estimated $11,000 in damages to a home at 1615 Rawlings St., according to a Goldsboro Fire Department report.
The fire damaged duct work and spread throughout the one-floor home, Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said.
The home, occupied by Rosellen Allen, was valued at $45,000, and contents were valued at $10,000. Damages were set at about $8,000 to the home and $3,000 to contents.
Thirteen firefighters answered the 12:04 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed almost two hours to put out the fire, ventilate the home and finish salvage work.
Kitchen fire
Indian Springs volunteer firefighters did not have far to go to reach their trucks last week when they got a call about a kitchen fire. The firefighters and their guests were enjoying their annual banquet at the station at 3500 Arrington Bridge Road.
"We had a fast response," Chief Leroy Blizzard said. "The house was only about a half-mile from the station."
A resident at 4105 Arrington Bridge Road had forgotten about a pan of grease on the stove, Blizzard said. But before the firefighters could arrive, the resident had put out the fire with an extinguisher.
Damage was estimated at $1,000 at Roger Edmundson's home that was valued at $50,000. Contents were valued at $40,000.
When the call came in, Blizzard said, he asked dispatchers to send another department because of the banquet. Arrington Fire Chief Randy Rodgers was attending the dinner and arrived first at the home. His department assisted at the scene. Two other departments were dispatched but quickly told to disregard the call.
Blizzard said Indian Springs firefighters returned in time to the station to help clean up after the banquet.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $20,500 Wednesday in four traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-car collision at 6:19 p.m. Wednesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Northwood Drive, Goldsboro police said. Mollie M. Mozeley, 44, of Northwood Drive was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, and Tiffani Joanna Grimes, 17, of Pinehaven Court was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Mozeley, who was making a left turn to Northwood Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Mozeley's car had collided with the northbound auto that Ms. Grimes was driving.
*A pedestrian was struck by a car at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday in the Gambro Health Care parking lot at 1704 Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. Gladys Mae Croston, 74, of Poplar Street was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where her condition was not immediately available. The driver who was backing up, Catherine Diane Woodard, 46, of Woods Street, LaGrange, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Her car was not damaged.
*Damages were estimated at $8,500 in a three-vehicle, rear-end crash at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on West Grantham Street near Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70-117 bypass, police said. Two westbound drivers -- Joshua Michael Ryan, 30, of Rosson Drive, Pikeville, and Lori W. Edwards, 32, of Smithfield -- were charged with failure to reduce speed. The other motorist, Norman Lewis Black, 37, of Garner, had stopped for traffic.
*Damages were set at $6,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:19 p.m. Wednesday on South Slocumb Street near Seymour Drive, police said. One driver, Ribji Kandeel, 49, of South Slocumb Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Kandeel was making a left turn into a parking lot and his car collided with an oncoming, northbound pickup truck that was driven by Kevin George Hitchner, 41, of Marie Avenue.
Weapons stolen
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Three rifles, a shotgun, a scope, wrapped children's Christmas presents, a DVD player and two DVD movies were stolen Wednesday from a home in the 200 block of Blackjack Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had smashed a window to get inside. The resident, Darrick Keith Smith, put a $2,100 value on the firearms and a $2,380 value on the other property.
*Credit cards and other personal papers were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a car window was broken in the 200 block of Clairmont Drive, deputies said. The resident, K.A. Bowden, estimated the value of the stolen property at $40 and damage at $300.
*A thief smashed a car window, inflicting about $300 in damages in order to steal $6, deputies said. The resident and owner, C.W. Brock, said the crime occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday in the 100 block of Clairmont Drive.
