Tommy's Road teacher honored

Tommy's Road Elementary School teacher Cathie Hooks has been awarded the 2005 NC Technology Educator Award. She was recognized in Greensboro recently at the North Carolina Educators Technology Conference luncheon.
A fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Hooks won the award for the integration of technology into her curriculum. She uses electric piano keyboards and music websites to expand the perimeters of her classroom. She also uses digital photography to increase the ability of her students, especially those with attention deficit disorder, to stay better focused on lessons for longer periods of time.
"Cathie does not work in isolation. She collaborates with her teammates to integrate technology in whole class and whole grade instruction. Through numerous grants, Cathie has developed programs that are innovative ways to help students become personally involved with varied technological pedagogies," said Assistant Principal Sheila Wolfe
Mrs. Hooks is in her 32nd year as a classroom teacher. Last December, she was selected as the first national winner of the AOL@Schools-NEA Foundation Award for Technology Leadership.
"This is a prestigious award and Mrs. Hooks exemplifies how to effectively use technology in the classroom," said Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of the Wayne County school system.
