Correction
A report in Sunday's Public Record incorrectly said Linda Jones, 59, of Mount Olive had been charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
Mrs. Jones had reported to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that someone had tried to pass another person's check at Southern Bank and Trust Co. in Dudley, where she worked.
The same man had attempted to pass another person's check at three other Southern Bank branches in Duplin County, the report said. No one has been charged in the case.
Clerk robbed
A gas station clerk was robbed before dawn today of an undetermined amount of money by a man wielding a shotgun, Goldsboro police reported.
The woman clerk told officers that a black man entered the Savemore station at 1903 E. Ash St. at about 2:35 a.m., pointed the shotgun and demanded money. The clerk opened the drawer, and the robber grabbed the cash and fled east, the report said.
The robber was described as being in his 20s, 5-feet-5 and 130 pounds with a medium build and close-cut black hair. He wore a green Army jacket, a dark scarf and blue jeans. Anyone with information on the holdup was asked to call police at 705-6572 or Goldsboro-Wayne Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
Purse stolen
An elderly woman from Seven Springs was the victim of a unique purse snatching at Wal-Mart, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The woman was getting ready to pay for her purchases at a checkout counter when she discovered that the purse in her cart was stuffed with paper, the report said.
The woman's purse had been replaced with a new one. Her purse contained about $120, keys, credit cards and personal papers, the report said. The theft occurred at about 3 p.m. Dec. 2.
Cooking fires
Unattended cooking was blamed for three recent kitchen fires, according to Wayne County fire officials.
A pot left on a stove Monday resulted in about $1,500 in damages to a home at 506 N. Sycamore St., Fremont Fire Chief Donnie Wilkerson said. The microwave oven and cabinets were damaged.
About a dozen Fremont firefighters answered the 1 a.m. call with four trucks.
Unattended cooking was blamed Saturday for a small kitchen fire that caused about $300 in damages at 3206 Central Heights Road, according to a Goldsboro Fire Department report.
The property was valued at $25,000, and contents were valued at $5,000. Sixteen firefighters answered the 12:31 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car.
A fire on Friday also damaged a kitchen at 4105 Arrington Bridge Road, Arrington Fire Chief Randy Rodgers said. Indian Springs, Dudley and Pricetown volunteers also were dispatched.
The residents were not identified.
4 hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $37,200 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were set at $7,500 in a two-car wreck at 4:20 p.m. Monday on East Ash Street near Spence Avenue, Goldsboro police said. One driver who was leaving a parking lot, Alma Diane Huffins, 47, of Airline Road, was charged with a yield violation. The report said Ms. Huffins' car had collided with a westbound auto that was driven by Francine Yvette Hill, 30, of Parkstown Road, LaGrange.
*Damages were estimated at $7,100 in a two-vehicle collision at 11:08 a.m. Sunday on Old Smithfield Road near Ferry Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. One westbound driver, Gevankco J. Flagg, 40, of Mill Creek Court, was charged with improper passing. As she was passing, the report said, the other driver, Dal Delma Keppler, 49, of Old Smithfield Road, was turning into a driveway.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-car crash at 1:05 p.m. Saturday at Pikeville-Princeton and Old Kenly Road roads, the Highway Patrol said. Janet T. Grice, 33, of Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Grice, who was going south, was charged with a yield violation after her car collided with a westbound auto that was driven by Larry Eugene Norman III, 18, of Kenly.
*Three people were injured and damages were set at $9,600 in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:40 p.m. Friday at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Servando Sanchez Alonso, 22, of Little Wiggins Road, LaGrange, and the other motorist, Wesley Edison Bland, 78, and his passenger, Novella Bland, 72, both of Kinston, were released after emergency-room treatment. Alonso, who was going south, was charged with a yield violation after the pickup truck that he was driving collided with Bland's eastbound minivan, the report said.
*Damages were put at $6,500 in a two-car, rear-end collision at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near Claridge Nursery Road, the Highway Patrol said. One eastbound driver, Delores J. Smith, 77, of Rosewood Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other motorist, Douglas MacArthur Whitlow, 63, of Kinston, was slowing for traffic, the report said.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A diamond wedding ring set, diamond earrings, a gold charm bracelet, a gold necklace and a drill set were stolen between Dec. 5 and Monday from a home in the 300 block of Blackjack Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The resident, W.F. Cole, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,865 and damage at $50.
*A double-barrel shotgun and two video games were stolen between Sunday and dawn today after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Cedar Lake Drive, deputies said. The resident, David Earl Lambert, estimated the property's value at $350 and damage at $150.
Bomb threat
A bomb threat was telephoned Monday to Goldsboro High School, according to a police report.
The call was received at about 11:35 a.m. The school was searched, and no bomb was found. The caller was described as a young black man.
