Red Cross honors blood volunteers

The American Red Cross's Wayne County chapter honored individuals, businesses and institutions last week for contributing to its blood-collection efforts during the year. Donors gave 6,300 units of blood in 2005, officials said.
Awards were given not only to donors but to companies and groups who sponsored blood drives.
"Because of you, the blood supply was adequate when a mother heard that her child had leukemia. Because of you, the blood supply was adequate when a child heard that his father had been in a car accident. Because of you, the blood supply was adequate when a sister heard that her brother had been severely burned," Blood Services Director Samia Garner told the people in attendance.
Chevrolet-Cadillac of Goldsboro received the Margaret M. Moore Trophy given to a business with 100 or fewer employees that had the most blood collected among eligible employees.
Officials with Wayne Memorial Hospital accepted the Arnold B. Edgerton Award given to a business with 100 or more employees with the most blood collected among eligible employees.
Rosewood High School won the High School Award for collecting the most blood.
Awards were also given to businesses sponsoring at least four blood drives during the year. Recipients were Berkeley Mall, Carolina Turkeys, Georgia Pacific, Goldsboro Milling Co., Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Wayne Community College, Lowe's and Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Media awards for helping publicize blood-collection events went to the Goldsboro News-Argus, PACC 10, WGBR and the Mount Olive Tribune.
Receiving Contributor Awards for donating prizes and gifts to reward donors were Krispy Kreme, Wal-Mart, Franklin Baking Co., and Adam's Auto Wash, which gave more than 6,000 free car wash coupons.
Individuals honored for having donated 10 or more gallons of blood were: Edwin Adams, Raymond Aube, Joseph Babish, Ramon Batts, John Blizzard, Melinda Caughron, Paul Conway, David Cox, Brenda Dexter, John Franks, Byron Gould, Thomas Gwatney, Earl Hatcher, Norman Hunt, Charles Immler, George Johnson, Jean Johnson, Charles Kirk, Raymond Kleber, Letitia Lippencott, Wilbert Martin, Willaim McCroy Jr., David Meador, Elizabeth Meador, Isaac Mozingo Jr., John Owens, Richard Pender, Gregory Ricker, Thurman Saylor, Denny Sibbett, Agnes Smith, John Smith, James Summerlin and Ronald Truckenbrod.
Wayne chapter Director Chuck Waller praised the blood services donors and volunteers, and reminded those present that Christmas is a time of year for giving to others in need.
"What better way than to give blood?" Waller said.
