Greenwood Middle School teen remains in serious condition

Carson Thomas, one of two Greenwood Middle School students injured Nov. 18, is in serious condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said this morning.
Thomas, 13, was hit by an oncoming sports utility vehicle at a crosswalk as he and two other boys headed to school.
Mackenzie Wessels, the other boy injured in the accident, was treated and released from Pitt Memorial within a week of the incident. Wessels, 13, is currently recovering at his home.
The driver, Wilder Fidelmar Alvarado Mejia, 20, is being held in Wayne County Jail under $200,000 bond and faces two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and three traffic misdemeanors.
Mejia's identity has been in question since the accident, where he allegedly gave police a different name, "Luis Delgado Jesus". Law enforcement officials said they will not release the man unless his identity is confirmed.
Earlier this week, Attorney Robert Smith, who represents the driver, said his client never gave a false name to police, adding that the attorneys have both a passport and identification card for Mejia.
Smith said those documents will be sent to the district attorney's office.
Meanwhile, Greenwood students have rallied behind their injured classmates, taking on numerous projects to show their support.
Some made cards, wrote journal entries and drew pictures. Others used iron-on letters to create Carson and Mack sweatshirts.
