DUDLEY -- A driver who was killed Friday night when the car that he was driving slammed into a house at 2200 Emmaus Church Road was identified as Daniel Olvera Ruiz, 19, of 351 Ada Stroud Road, Seven Springs.

Trooper J.S. Smith said Ruiz was fleeing north from a marked Wayne County sheriff's deputy's car at about 11:27 p.m. at a high rate of speed. Ruiz lost control of the 1994 Ford in a left curve, and it ran off the left side and struck a fence and the house.

Ruiz was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A sleeping resident, Terry Lofton, was injured when the car plowed into the side of the cinderblock house. He was treated by rescue personnel for minor injuries.

The car, valued at $6,000, was demolished. It was registered to Maria Del Pilar Verde Ruiz of Allegheny Place, Dudley.

Damage to the home, which is owned by Harvey Hines of Dudley, was estimated at $25,000.

The highway death was the 20th in 2005 on Wayne County roads, including three in Goldsboro.
