House fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Wednesday night for a fire that caused about $16,000 in damages to a house at 1013 Greenleaf St., a Goldsboro fire official said.
Assistant Chief Gary Whaley said a resident had left a pot on the stove, went to another room and returned to see the kitchen on fire.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 6:12 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They arrived within four minutes.
"Fire and flames were showing from the back of the house," Whaley said. "We made a quick knockdown."
The fire was controlled within 12 minutes, but firefighters remained for about 45 more minutes, investigating the cause and finishing salvage and overhaul work. The Red Cross is assisting the residents.
The one-floor, wood-frame home was occupied by Shalonda Wooten and owned by Woodard Realty. It was valued at $50,000. Contents were valued at $3,000. Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the home and $1,000 to contents, Whaley said.
Dryer fire
MOUNT OLIVE -- A heating and air-conditioning crew saw a fire Wednesday at an old colonial home at 309 E. James St. and put it out, keeping damages to a minimum, officials said.
"They saw the fire under the house, set up an old-fashioned bucket brigade and dumped water on it," Assistant Mount Olive Fire Chief Greg Wiggins said. "They had it knocked down by the time we got there."
Lint in the dryer was blamed. The fire was confined to the laundry room, but smoke damage spread through the home. Mount Olive firefighters needed about 40 minutes to investigate the cause, ventilate the home and finish salvage work.
Damages were estimated at $2,000. The home, owned by Kenny Moore, was valued at $400,000.
First appearance
The Goldsboro teenager accused of robbing the Peoples National Bank last week in Mount Olive has made his first appearance in Wayne County District Court.
Raymond Lemuel Cheadle III, 18, of West Oak Street waived his right to a court-appointed lawyer and told Judge Rose V. Williams that he will hire his own lawyer or represent himself.
Cheadle was charged by Mount Olive police with armed robbery of the bank on Dec. 1. He was charged three days later by Goldsboro police with misdemeanor possession of a weapon on school grounds and possession of a controlled substance.
Cheadle was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 secured bond.
Three charges
A 29-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony offenses in connection with a residential break-in.
Montrail Ortiz Davis of Beal Street was accused of an October break-in on Peachtree Street, Investigator G.N. Lynch said. Davis was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $6,000 secured bond.
Goldsboro Housing Authority police and the police Selective Enforcement Unit assisted in the arrest. Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the investigation.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $1,000, 20 compact discs and man's cologne were stolen between Wednesday and dawn from a pickup truck in a parking lot at 400 W. Holly St., Goldsboro police said. The thief had smashed two windows to enter the truck. The owner, Jose Wilfredo Lopez Nataren of Dudley, put a $505 value on the CDs and cologne and set damages at $150.
*A computer keyboard and monitor were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a window was broken at Jackson Motor Sales at 411 N. William St., police said. The stolen property was valued at $400. Damage was put at $300.
*A 32-inch television was stolen Wednesday after a door was pried open at a home in the 900 block of Durham Lake Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Christine Holmes, put a $375 value on the TV and set damage at $20.
*A television and a video cassette recorder were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a window was pried open at Happy Days Daycare at 106 E. Lockhaven Drive, police said. The stolen property was valued at $600.
*A red 1987 flatbed Aztec trailer was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from 2000 Trucking Inc. at 705 S. George St., police said. The trailer was worth $5,000.
