Afternoon fire destroys city family's home

A mobile home was destroyed Tuesday in a fire that was caused by unattended cooking, a Goldsboro Fire Department official said.
The lone occupant and owner, Latisha Johnson, escaped unharmed from her single-wide home at 150 Country View Drive.

"It was 50 percent involved" when firefighters arrived, Fire Lt. Carlton Parks said today. "There were open flames showing."
The blaze started from a pot on the stove, he said.
The 10-foot-by-50-foot home and its contents were valued at $5,000, Parks said. The home was owned by Ms. Johnson's mother, Alesia Johnson, who lives at 146 Country View Drive.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 1:57 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. The first engine arrived at 2:03 p.m., and the fire was controlled at 2:11 p.m. They remained until 3:20 p.m. to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
No adjacent homes were threatened by the fire, Parks said. "Everyone did a good job," he added.
