Junior Leadership Class has 19 students

The Wayne County Junior Leadership Class for 2005 is made up of 19 high school students who have demonstrated high academic progress with a desire to become involved in their community.
Membership in the class is open to high school juniors in public, private or parochial schools. Junior Leadership meets for six full-day sessions, from October through May, and each student also completes 10 hours of volunteer service. Each session is geared around a particular area about Wayne County, from history and education, to health care, business and industry, as well as government and law and agri-business.
Graduation ceremonies are held in May.
Sudie Davis, executive director of Communities in Schools, coordinates the program that is in its eighth year. She said from the outset each year, the goal is build a solid team.
"The first program day, orientation, is spent doing multiple hands-on activities communication, diversity, culture, teamwork, perception -- in order to allow the students to bond," she said. "We feel this day is critical to the success of the program because the students become one group instead of several little groups from individual schools."
This year's class members include Jamie Andrews and Julie Stanley of Rosewood High School; Raychel Batts, Amy Fryt, Garrett Forrest, Alyssa Grey, Lauren McAuliffe, Elizabeth Peele, Kenna Reid and Nida Waheed of Charles B. Aycock; Tyler Brannnan of Wayne Christian School; Sarah Compton, Jasmine McLamb, Dustin Rhodes, Melissa Ricker and Dustin Smith of Eastern Wayne High; Marcia McCoy and Cameron Sutton of Spring Creek High; and Christy Westbrook of Southern Wayne High.
