From staff reports

A Wayne County fifth-grader was recently chosen to be part of a state honors chorus.

Demarcus Kelly of Carver Elementary School in Mount Olive was among 200 elementary students from across the state. The group sang earlier this month at the North Carolina Music Educators Elementary Honors Chorus, held in Winston-Salem.

An A-honor roll student and a member of his school's chorus, Demarcus' vocal skills earned him a solo in one of the six songs chosen for the performance. The concert was part of the convention for the Music Educators of North Carolina.

Carver music teacher LaVone Hicks says, "Demarcus has a passion and appreciation for music and uses his talents to inspire those around him. He's also well-liked by his teachers and peers."

Mrs. Hicks said the school was very proud of Demarcus' accomplishment

"His character and musical talents made him the ideal representative of Wayne County Public Schools to sing in the state honors chorus," she said.
