Fremont Town Board approves flood ordinance

FREMONT -- The Fremont Town Board unanimously approved a flood damage prevention ordinance during a special meeting Tuesday in Town Hall.
The ordinance protects three environmentally sensitive areas in the town's extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction from future construction. The areas are on the east, northeast and northwest sides of town.
Town Administrator Kerry McDuffie said Wednesday that there is currently no development in the protected areas. Any structure built in them would have to be raised above the projected flood level, McDuffie said.
The ordinance is modeled after one proposed by the state Emergency Management Office and is the same as the one approved by the Wayne County commissioners.
In other business, the board received a reply from the state regarding the planting of flowers at the intersection of the new U.S. 117 and N.C. 222.
Earlier this month, board members agree to ask the state Department of Transportation to plant daffodils at the interchange. Fremont is nicknamed the Daffodil town and holds its annual Daffodil Festival each year in the March.
DOT officials declined.
Board members discussed a class on the essentials of municipal government held by the North Carolina League of Municipalities for new council members at the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill.
McDuffie reminded the board that the town's annual Christmas parade will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 3 and said board members are invited to the Fremont Volunteer Fire Department's Christmas banquet on Dec. 8.
