Warsaw holding 85th Veterans Day celebration Saturday

WARSAW -- Warsaw will hold its 85th annual Veterans Day celebration Saturday.
The day-long celebration, including a parade, is the oldest consecutive celebration of Veterans Day in the U.S.
The parade begins at 11 a.m., commemorating the signing of the armistice ending World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom are being invited to ride on the the Duplin County Veterans Museum float. Spots on the float can be reserved by calling Linda Kitchin at 910-293-7804.
The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge and a sidewalk sale downtown at 9.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park, led by Roy C. Meares, state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Grand marshal for the parade will be retired Brigadier Gen. Kenneth Newbold of the North Carolina National Guard.
A barbeque lunch will follow the parade at noon at the Warsaw Fire Station.
At 1 p.m. the Duplin County Veterans Museum, located at the historic Best House will open for tours. The Warsaw Community Chorus will perform at 1 p.m.m. and a military band will perform at 1:30 p.m.
The celebration will conclude with a dance and concert at 8 p.m. at VFW Post 9810.
