5 hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $42,500 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and both cars were demolished in a collision at 11:50 a.m. Sunday at N.C. 55 and Indian Springs Road near Mount Olive, the Highway Patrol said. Raul Antonio Garcia Jr., 27, of East Main Street, Eureka, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. William Robert Brock, 60, of Winterville, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The cars were valued at $13,000.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 8:07 a.m. Saturday on A Street near North George Street, Goldsboro police said. Larry Donnell Lofton Jr., 26, of Salem Church Road released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with failure to reduce speed and a seat-belt violation. Damages were set at $4,000.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car crash at 5:50 p.m. Saturday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Parkway Drive, police said. Aluna Tabuen Williams, 40, of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, and a passenger in the other car, Octavius M. Burns of Longleaf Avenue, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Williams was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A Goldsboro driver was charged with driving while impaired and driving while his license was revoked after a one-car wreck at 7:30 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 117 South near Arrington Bridge Road, police said. Bobby Detorus Harvey, 25, of West Hooks River Road was not hurt, the report said. The car ran off the right side and struck a power pole. The car, valued at $8,000, was destroyed.
*Damage was estimated at $5,500 in a one-car wreck at 11:20 p.m. Saturday at N.C. 111 and Bett Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Kevin Scott Davis, 27, of Bett Drive, was charged with failure to report a collision.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-car collision at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Peachtree and North Claiborne streets, police said. Lola Smith, 76, of North William Street was released after emergency-room treatment. Tameshia Renae Spain, 29, of Peachtree Street, was charged with a stop-sign violation.
17th drug arrest
A 17th person was arrested Friday by Wayne County Sheriff's deputies in a year-long undercover drug campaign. Devon Barry Richardson, 25, of Kenly was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and sale and delivery of cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail underof a $25,000 secured bond.
Three more people are being sought. Wayne County authorities have filed 52 charges against 20 defendants.
Fraud attempt
A Goldsboro woman was called Saturday by a man and was told that she had won $150,000 in an "American Direct Sweepstakes" contest, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. The woman said the man said he represented the "Consumer Protection Agency." The caller said the check would arrive in a few days and that she need to send a check for $439 for delivery insurance, the report said. Diana Palmer believed that the call was a scam and hung up. She called deputies to tell them to inform the public about it.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A bag with $1,930 and a pocketbook were stolen between Thursday and Friday from a home in the 100 block of South Timber Place.
*A beige, four-door 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee was stolen Sunday from a parking lot on U.S. 117 South in Mar Mac. Thelma Bryant of Riegelwood said she left the key in the vehicle. The vehicle was valued at $5,000.
*A high school class ring from Michigan, eyeglasses, eight movie DVDs, a watch, a purse and $540 were stolen between Friday and Saturday from an unlocked car in the 300 block of Big Daddy's Road. Ashlee Lawrence of Wilson, put a $718 value on her property, in addition to the cash.
*A cell phone, 50 phone cards and cigarettes were stolen between Friday and Saturday from a vehicle in the 200 block of Big Daddy's Road. Jose Enrique Sanchez, estimated the value of the stolen property at $525 and damage at $50.
*Damages were estimated at $1,500 from gunshots between Oct. 23 and Sunday at a home in the 200 block of Fox Drive. Gunfire damaged a window and the exterior of Charles Edward Smith's home.
Break-ins
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A DVD-VCR combination, a DVD player, stereo equipment and other property were stolen Sunday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 200 block of South Randolph Street, police said. The resident, Allen Head, put an $1,849 value on his property.
*A DVD player and nine DVD movies were stolen Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of South Alabama Avenue, police said. The resident, Elbert Barnes, estimated the stolen property's value at $239 and damage at $100.
*A television was stolen Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 300 block of Devereaux Street, police said. The resident, Larry McCoy, put a $186 value on the TV and set damage at $50.
