Wayne native Edwards honored

Matthew Edwards, Ph.D., a professor of physics at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in Huntsville, Ala., received the Emerald Honors Award in Research Science at the Minor-ities in Re-search Science Conference in September in Baltimore.
A 1965 graduate of Central High School, Edwards is the son of the late Calena and Offie Collin Edwards. He and his wife, Glenda, have two children: Matthew Jr. of Philadelphia and Natasha Edwards of Fayetteville.
The awards are sponsored by Science Spectrum magazine, which recognized talented minorities from a broad range of scientific fields for exceptional achievement. The winners will be featured in the magazine.
Edwards is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University with a degree in engineering and physics. He earned his master's degree and doctorate at Howard University and continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill while teaching at Fayetteville State University.
Edwards is a member of the American Physical Society, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the International Society for Optical Engineering, the Huntsville Electro-Optical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers and Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society.
