Wayne County's 2005 Veterans Day parade will be held on Friday, Nov. 11, in downtown Goldsboro. It be-gins at 11 a.m.

Organizer George Carberry said the event will pay special tribute to the National Guard Reserve and active duty military personnel who are serving or who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The event is sponsored by the Wayne County Veterans and Patriots Coalition, which Carberry said is hoping for a large turnout "to honor the men and women and their loved ones and the sacrifices they are making to protect our freedoms at home and defeat terrorism around the world."

The coalition is seeking parade entries from school bands and organizations. Carberry said they're looking for participation from Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops; civic, business and fraternal organizations; military and veterans groups; and fire, rescue and law enforcement personnel. He said they will welcome "literally any person or group that wants to take part in this important observance."

The deadline for parade entries is Nov. 4. Any one interested in entering the parade can get applications or information from Carberry at 778-9636 or Wayne Veterans Officer Brenda Forsythe at 731-1490. Her e-mail address is Brenda.forsythe@waynegov.com.

Attendance at Veterans Day observances in recent years has been low, Carberry said.

"With so many of our fellow citizens willing to put their lives on the line for us, the least we can do is turn out on Veterans Day and give them a massive show of support," he said.
