Activities planned to increase awareness of domestic violence

A candlelight vigil and a poster contest are just some of the activities that the Lighthouse of Wayne County is sponsoring for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The candlelight vigil will be held Oct. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gazebo in Herman Park. Speakers will be domestic violence survivors. D.J. Coles will perform.
"It is part of what we're trying to do to increase public awareness about domestic violence," said Cheri Seronick, the co-director of the Lighthouse.
She urged anyone who has been affected by domestic violence or anyone who knows someone who has to come out to the candlelight vigil and show their support.
The Lighthouse also sponsored a poster contest in the local middle and high schools. This year's theme was "Love Shouldn't Hurt." Cash awards, provided by Andy's, will be given for first, second and third places at both the middle school and high school levels.
The posters will be on display at Berkeley Mall this weekend. The Lighthouse will have an information booth from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Marty and Delia Wach, who write and illustrate children's books using teddy bears as characters, have partnered with the Lighthouse to give programs in Wayne County Schools throughout the week.
The Lighthouse also will sponsor an information booth at several locations at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base this month.
