United Way campaign behind but still time to meet goal

This year's United Way campaign has fallen short of where it was at this point last year. But Campaign Chairman Jane Rustin is confident the goal of $1,425,000 will be met.
"We are a little behind, but not significantly," she said. "Everybody has been really distracted with all the other disasters happening."
So far the total stands at $354,725, 25 percent of the goal. That will improve 7,094 lives of Wayne County people.
The halfway point of the 2005 campaign, which began Aug. 30, is Oct. 14. Ms. Rustin said the campaign will end by Thanksgiving.
At a recent campaign report, it was announced that Wayne Memorial Hospital finished its employee campaign with a total of $187,534, which will improve 3,750 lives. That amount was a 16 percent increase over last year's campaign
Wayne Community College's employees raised $25,270, which was a 3 percent increase over last year and will improve 505 lives.
Ms. Rustin also recognized these businesses for completing employee campaigns -- Uchiyama America, $15,894 to improve 318 lives; Barnes Braswell and Haithcock, $2,058 to improve 41 lives; and Thompson Pump and Wellpoint, $1,310 to improve 26 lives.
"We have a lot to do in the next eight weeks with more than $1,070,000 needed to attain our goal of improving more than 28,500 lives," Ms. Rustin said. She said she thinks the goal is in sight.
"But I feel that we are absolutely going to meet that goal. We've had some very encouraging results from some employee campaigns. Other employee campaigns are under way, but just have not been reported yet."
