Man sentenced
in armed holdup
An 18-year-old man from Mount Olive has been sentenced to 38 to 55 months in prison after pleading guilty in Wayne County Superior Court to the armed robbery of a man in Goldsboro.
Joshua E. Davis of South Center Street was accused of robbing Michael Hyland at gunpoint on Dec. 18 in the 1900 block of North William Street.
When Hyland returned to his truck, he told police that a black man had displayed a handgun and demanded his money. The robber took Hyland's cell phone and wallet with $50 and personal papers.
The suspect also told Hyland that someone had broken into his truck and had stolen a compact disc player, a speaker and an amplifier. The stolen property was valued at $1,025.
Davis was identified as the robber and was arrested by police. He was indicted by the Wayne County Grand Jury in September on the armed robbery charge. A charge of possession of a weapon of mass destruction was dismissed.
Davis, who served 288 days in jail while awaiting his sentencing, also was ordered by Judge Ripley E. Rand of Raleigh to pay his court-appointed lawyer $655 and $1,025 in restitution, if he is granted work release.
Assault conviction
A man was convicted in Wayne County District Court of three misdemeanor counts of sexual battery.
Lonnie Casey Jr., 62, of South Slocumb Street was accused during the summer of fondling three women who lived in his trailer park.
Casey was sentenced to 60 days in jail. The term was suspended on condition that he complete 12 months of unsupervised probation and pay a $250 fine and $110 in court costs.
Casey, who was represented by Goldsboro lawyer Sarah Heekin, appealed the decision of Judge Rose V. Williams to Superior Court.
The complaints were filed by Teresa A. Harrelson, Angelena Middleton and Theresa Major.
Man assaulted
A 33-year-old Goldsboro man was shot in the leg Wednesday night as he entered a convenience store, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Eric L. Thompson of Lincoln Drive told officers that he was going into Kaiser's Food Mart at 1111 Olivia Lane at about 9:20 p.m. He said he heard three shots, then felt one but did not see a suspect.
Thompson was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Later, Thompson was arrested by police and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury on Sept. 6. He was accused of stabbing a woman, Peggy McCullen, who lived on Courtyard Circle.
Additional charges
A Goldsboro man who was arrested Monday by Wayne County sheriff's deputies on felony marijuana violations now faces four additional felony firearms charges.
When Cleveland Lavon Ward, 27, of Belfast Avenue was arrested, deputies seized several firearms. After a further investigation by the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team, Ward was charged with two felony counts each of possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His secured bond was set at $25,000 on the charges.
Ward already was jailed under a $20,000 secured bond on the drug charges.
Deputy's car hit
A driver from Mount Olive was charged by the Highway Patrol with failure to yield to a law-enforcement vehicle after the pickup truck that he was driving collided with a Wayne County sheriff's deputy's patrol car.
Deputy Kenneth W. Grice, 33, of Goldsboro was going west on O'Berry Road at 6:14 p.m. Sunday, with his blue lights and siren activated in response to an emergency call, the report said.
As Grice crossed U.S. 117, a southbound pickup truck driven by Mario Ambrocio Cruz, 23, of Cleveland Drive collided with the patrol car, the report said. Cruz also was charged with driving while his license was revoked.
Damage was estimated at $2,500 to the 2004 Ford patrol car and also to the pickup truck that was registered to Wanda I. Castillo-Brown of Albertson.
Meanwhile, damages were estimated at $6,800 in a two-car collision at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 117 South near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Danny William Bass, 53, of Providence Church Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other northbound motorist, William Ansel Mulligan, 37, of Eagle Place, had stopped for another wreck.
