Pamela Lewis, health occupations teacher at Spring Creek High School, has been named the N.C. Association of Career and Technical Education New Teacher of the Year for 2005.

The award, given to a full-time teacher with at least three years, and no more than five years, of teaching experience and who has made significant contributions to their programs.

School board member Pete Gurley recognized Ms. Lewis at the board's recent meeting. He said that Ms. Lewis developed a new health occupations program at Spring Creek five years ago and is advisor for the Health Occupations Student Association at the school.

"Over the past five years, student interest in health occupations has grown tremendously," he said.

The club has been active in many community service projects each year, Gurley added.

"Ms. Lewis was one of the first teachers to guide her program so that students would be certified as nursing assistants who also serve in our communities," he said.

"With love of work and compassion for others, many of her students have continued their education as nurses and doctors."
