Sections of Ash Street will be closed Thursday evening, marking the start of what officials hope will be no more than a two-week paving project.

Beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the blocks of Ash Street between George and William Street will be closed while crews mill the existing road, adjust manholes and adjust water valves to prep for paving. Construction will end at 6:30 a.m. the following morning.

This preparation phase will follow the same hours each night and is expected to last a week, after which paving will begin. Once crews finish preparing the section between George and William Street, the next closings on Ash will be between William and Herman streets.

Kevin Bowen, an engineer with Apac-Atlantic Inc., said the decision to work from early evening through the early morning hours should help reduce traffic problems. Additionally, detour signs will be clearly displayed to help ease the flow of traffic during construction.

"We hope traffic won't be an issue," Bowen said. "But if traffic gets really bad, we are prepared to make adjustments."

Paving will begin upon completion of preparation work and will most likely take place during the day, he said.
