Driver in crash with tobacco trailer dies

A women whose sport utility vehicle was struck by a runaway tobacco trailer Friday on Drummersville Road near Daly Chapel Road has died.
Malena Aubrey Schimmel, 30, of 318 Drummersville Road, Seven Springs, suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She died Saturday.
State Highway Patrol Trooper Jimmy Graham said one of two loaded tobacco trailers being pulled by a pickup truck came loose and struck Ms. Schimmel's SUV on the driver's side.
The pickup was driven by Herlindo Resendiz of Daly Chapel Road, the trooper said, and it was registered to Kenneth Wilson Rouse of Liddell Road.
Graham has not completed an investigation of the wreck.
The fatality was the 13th in 2005 on Wayne County roads.
