New collection point for hurricane relief

A new collection point for donations for hurricane victims as well as a prayer vigil for those suffering from the aftermath of Katrina are among the ways Wayne County residents are offering their support for Mississippi and Louisiana.
Houser Associates is accepting these items nonperishable foods, baby formula, baby and adult diapers, feminine products, flashlights and batteries, bug spray and sun screen, work and rubber gloves, bath towels and wash cloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste and mouthwash, combs, hairbrushes and hair bands, soap, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, water, trash bags, wipes, clothing of all sizes, duct tape, rakes and tarps and school supplies.
Monetary donations also will be accepted.
Items may be dropped off at Houser Associates at 504 N. Spence Ave. Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
United Van Lines has donated a trailer in which Houser Associates will collect the items.
"We as Realtors aren't able to provide the victims of Hurricane Katrina a home, but our agents and myself feel like we can help try to give them some of the comforts of home," said Nancy Keck, owner of Houser Associates Realty.
Darrell Horne, owner of United Van Lines said the company's typical business is moving people's lives. "At a time when so many lives have been disrupted, what better time to move in with a Horne truck full of supplies to help improve their quality of life," he said.

Rebuilding Broken Places Community Development Corp. is looking for backpacks filled with school supplies, bottled water and monetary donations.
Items may be taken to Rebuilding Broken Places at 2105 N. William St. through Monday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. They will be delivered directly to churches that are providing assistance to the flood victims in Mississippi and Texas.
Project coordinators are Christine Crank, Lorice Grady Smith and the Rev. William J. Barber II. "We are asking for the help from our entire community as we reach out to help children in need," said Barber.

Rebuilding Broken Places will also hold a community prayer service Sunday at 6 p.m. at 2105 N. William St. The speaker will be the Rev. William Ordelt, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Those attending will have the opportunity to hear the testimony from a family that survived Hurricane Katrina.
