Several injured
in holiday crashes
State Highway Patrol troopers and Goldsboro police investigated numerous traffic collisions over the long Labor Day weekend. No one was killed, but several accidents involved injuries and significant property damage.
Among the collisions were:
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle accidednt at 11:34 a.m. Saturday on Cuyler Best Road near New Hope Road, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Christine Lynn Benninger, 31, of Catherine Street, was charged with driving left of center and failure to reduce speed.
*Damages were set at $5,000 in a two-truck crash at 5:54 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 117 and Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Glennie Marion Brock, 47, of South Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other driver was identified as Tiffany Lynn Pope, 19, of Woodview Drive.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a wreck at 11:02 p.m. Saturday on Old Grantham Road near Summit Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Joseph Fred Williams, 42, of Covey Drive, LaGrange, left Wayne Memorial Hospital against medical advice, a spokesman said. He was charged with driving while impaired after the bike ran off the right side and overturned. Damage was put at $50.
*A motorcyclist was injured and his bike was destroyed in a wreck at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Grantham School Road near Crows Foot Road, the Highway Patrol said. Allen Ray Darden, 20, of Odom Mill Road, Mount Olive, was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was charged with speeding . The motorcycle was valued at $6,000.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $13,500 in a three-vehicle collision at 5:01 p.m. Friday at Tommy's and Hare roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, James Porter Mullen, 54, of Striding Ridge Drive, and a second motorist, Maranda Pope Radford, 22, and a passenger, Carlie Radford, both of New Hope Road, were released after emergency-room treatment. Mullen, who was going south on Hare Road, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. James Carl Edelin, 29, of Old Smithfield Road, Princeton, was charged with driving while his license was revoked.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:33 p.m. Friday at U.S. 117 and Mount Carmel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Joshua Allen Howell, 16, of Nor Am Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash.
*A driver was injured and the car was demolished in a wreck at 6:40 a.m. Thursday on Hood Swamp Road near Smith Farm Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jennifer Leilani Howell, 20, of Joy Drive, LaGrange, was transferred from Wayne Memorial Hospital to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she was listed today in critical condition, a spokesman said. The car was valued at $6,000. The wreck remains under investigation.
*A northbound motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a pickup truck at 6:10 a.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and N.C. 222 in Fremont, the Highway Patrol said. Anthony Johnson, 47, of Quail Croft Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. A westbound motorist, Joshua Edwards Stutts, 21, of Frank Price Road, Fremont, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*An Amerigas work truck, with tools, was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 100 block of Southern Drive near Dudley, deputies said. The 1994 Ford truck, valued at $15,000, was returned to the driver's home, but an estimated $1,831 worth of tools were taken. The tools included three drills, two wrenches, three propane torches and chains.
*A blue, four-door 1997 Ford Taurus was stolen between Friday and Monday from the 2100 block of N.C. 222 East, deputies said. The resident and owner, Christy L. Davis, said the car was worth $9,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A red and black Milano scooter was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 1700 block of East Holly Street, police said. The resident and owner, Allen Holmes, said it was worth $1,700.
*A push mower and a hedge trimmer were stolen Friday after a shed door was damaged in the 1000 block of East Mulberry Street, police said. The resident, H.A. Rich, estimated the value of the stolen property at $200 and damage at $25.
*A window air conditioner was stolen and the window and wall were damaged between Friday and Saturday at an apartment in the 400 block of Gulley Street, police said. The unit was valued at $350, and damage was set at $75.
Sex charges
A 40-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with second-degree rape and a second-degree sexual offense.
Farante Roberson of Terrace Court was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond. Investigator Mike Moore arrested Roberson on Carver Drive.
Drug charges
A 27-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense.
Richard Ronald Harris of Sanborn Lane was charged with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Apartment fire
A bag of charcoal on Saturday caught fire and ignited lawn-care tools at 606 Wayne Ave., causing about $1,000 in damages. Spontaneous combustion was blamed, Goldsboro Fire Lt. Frank Sasser said.
Twelve firefighters answered the 12:14 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They remained about 20 minutes to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $800 to apartment building, occupied by Theodore Foye Jr. and owned by Theodore Foye Sr. of Goldsboro. Damage to contents was set at $200.
Missing
Two teenaged girls were reported missing Monday by relatives to Wayne County authorities
*Tina Kay Newsome, 16, of 456 Sambo Lambert Road was described as white, 5-feet-3 and 145 pounds with long, curly brown hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 6:15 p.m. Monday, she was wearing a white shirt, gray pants and white and gray athletic shoes.
*Dominique Danielle Howell, 15, of Apartment 47, 1100 N. Jefferson Ave., was described as black, 5-feet-2 and 125 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. She was seen last at 6 p.m. Sunday. No clothing description was available.
