Eastern Wayne High School students plan fundraiser for victims

A fundraiser planned for later this week at Eastern Wayne High School was prompted by students concerned about victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Donna Hopewell, career development coordinator at the school, said the first student who approached Principal Gene Byrd on Wednesday was Betty Rouse, a junior.
"Mr. Byrd said he thought it was a good idea to do something and referred her to me," Ms. Hopewell said. When another 11th-grader, Shelley Sherman, expressed a similar interest, the effort was launched.
The three brainstormed about possibilities to contribute to relief efforts. The idea of a barbecue sale was introduced by Byrd, who said it had met with success while he served as principal at Southern Wayne High School.
Wilber's Barbecue was enlisted and readily became involved, Ms. Hopewell said. The school's Key Club, athletic department, ROTC and Parent Support Group also got on board, agreeing to divide up and sell the 400 tickets.
Byrd said he has been impressed with the compassion shown by the students.
"I'm proud of the kids for wanting to do that," he said. "We're doing everything we can to help them with their effort."
Ms. Hopewell said the response demonstrates what young people are capable of doing for others in need.
"When a kid comes to you and says, 'I want to do something,' you do everything you can to make that possible."
The take-out plate sale will be held at the school on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and must be purchased in advance, Ms. Hopewell said. For more information, contact Ms. Hopewell at 751-7187.
